We had nice, dry weather on Saturday, so I was able to get the last plants in my garden. And here it is! It’s a 4′ by 4′ square, planted in the method described in Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew. It’s a really good method for me because the soil in our yard in lousy, and I like having just a small area to plant. Today for lunch I ate a salad of spinach and lettuce harvested from the garden – delicious! In addition to spinach and two varieties of lettuce, I planted green onions, basil, several kinds of tomatoes, bell peppers, and broccoli.
Oh, yum! We hope to get some tomatoes in by this weekend. Is this in the former sandbox area?
No, the former sandbox area is now the kitchen. 🙂 It’s behind the east (facing back yard) sunroom windows. The garden frame was new construction by me, with a little help from my more-skilled-with-a-drill spouse.
Oh wow! I’ve been thinking about square-foot gardening, because the weeds are so incredibly awful in our back yard. We have a garden plot, but keeping the grass out of it is practically a full-time job. How do you keep rabbits away from your lettuce?
Please post updates as the summer goes on!
That’s a good question about the rabbits. I haven’t done anything yet to keep them away from the lettuce, but they don’t seem to have noticed it yet. Keep your fingers crossed that it lasts!
